I unlocked my door and took a quick look at both sides of the corridor.
âYoung miss, Iâm sorry, but youâre not allowed to leave your room,â one of the two guards that were stationed by my door said, walking up to me.
âI know. I was only checking to be sure that you were fine. Do you not want to rest your legs for a while?â I asked, putting up an innocent look.
He smiled, tempted. He looked like he was having a hard time trying to decide. âMy lady, weâre perfectly fine. Itâs our job to keep you safe.â His young smile erupted.
The other guard was not interested in our little chit-chat.
I withdrew back into my room and engaged the lock before drawing close to the window.
My plan was a simple one. I was going to escape through the window.
Earlier, I had tied together some scarves. They would act as my drop rope.
Raising my window, I looked below. There were no guards in sight. I wasted no time in throwing out the rope after ensuring that one end was already secured to one leg of my bed.
Two floors above the ground.
My heart was slamming in my chest. Not from fear, but from the excitement that I was going to see Derek again tonight.
I gripped the scarves hard before dropping my weight out of the window. Thoughts of the scarves coming apart drifted through my mind, but it only pumped more adrenaline into me.
The climb down was thrilling. Until I got to the end of my makeshift rope.
I looked under me. The ground was still a bit distanced.
I looked around. Iâd break a bone if I let myself drop straight on the hard floor.
There was a bush some feet from where I was supposed to land. I was certain that the bush was just what I needed to cushion the effects of the drop.
I stood erect with my feet on the wall, using the rope to balance my mass. After making sure that I was ready, I broke into a sprint, running down the wall.
My plan wasnât successful.
One knot of the scarves came loose, bracing myself as I dropped to the ground.
Pain shot through my shoulder as I hit the ground, creating a loud thud. I lay there for a few seconds, staring up at my window. The guards would only notice that I was gone in the morning.
Footsteps approached from the right, causing me to spring up from the ground. I hid in the shadows of the wall, since the people were too close for me to try running.
I held my breath when one of the two guards that was walking by looked directly at me. I watched him tilt his head a bit.
I closed my eyes, silently wishing that heâd just walk away. It was too early to cause a commotion, and it was too late to give up.
He took a step in my direction.
Relief washed over me when the other guard grabbed him by the hand. âYouâre trying to sneak off again, kid?â
âNo, I swear, thereâs someone in the shadows.
